A relatively untapped treasure, we recommend you take a scenic drive to visit Kemptville and the hamlets of North Grenville just south of Ottawa and northeast of Brockville.
Located on the Rideau River, North Grenville offers a unique mix of urban and rural, with the many shops and restaurants of Kemptville, plus the quiet beauty of six heritage hamlets: Oxford Mills and Oxford Station, Bishops Mills, Burritts Rapids, Heckston & Peltons Corners.
Start your discovery with a visit to the UNESCO designated, World Heritage Rideau Canal. Check out the Burritts Rapids Lock Station where it’s always fascinating watching the Parks Canada staff work to bring the boats through the Lock and the swing bridge in the same way it’s been done since 1832. Walk the “Tip to Tip Trail”, a 4km nature walk that takes you along the river and through this picturesque, historic village. Then take a breather with a specialty coffee and pastry at The Boathouse Café across from the lockstation.
Talk to the animals during your visit to Saunders Country Critters. This Animal Sanctuary is located on 20-acres of parklike grounds and offers up-close encounters with an impressive array of rescued & rehomed mammals, reptiles, and birds. Your visit supports the care of exotic cats, lemurs, and capybaras, plus more familiar rescues like deer, hogs, and farm foul.
Located at 1058 County Rd #44 RR # 1, Oxford Station.
