Explore Historic Merrickville

Merrickville Blockhouse
A visit to Merrickville wouldn't be complete without exploring the Merrickville Blockhouse, a National Historic Site of Canada. Built in 1832, this stone fortification played a crucial role in the defense of the Rideau Canal during its early years. Today, it houses a museum showcasing artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the canal's construction and the village’s history. The blockhouse provides a fascinating glimpse into the past and is a great starting point for your Merrickville adventure.

Rideau Canal Locks
The Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an engineering marvel that stretches from Kingston to Ottawa. In Merrickville, you can witness the intricate lock system in action as boats pass through the village. The canal is not only a historic waterway but also a picturesque spot for a stroll, a picnic, or simply watching the boats go by. Don't forget your camera – the views are stunning!

Merrickville Ruins
For a taste of local history, visit the Merrickville Ruins. These remnants of the village’s industrial past include the ruins of old mills and factories that once powered the local economy. The site offers an intriguing contrast between nature and history, with ivy-covered stone walls and the serene waters of the Rideau River flowing nearby.
